Once a year, Apple people release an update to their leading gadget. In 2024, the smartphone will be called iPhone 16. Probably, the logic of the line will not undergo significant changes, and buyers will be presented with a series of devices: the basic 16, the Pro version, a model with a large screen (“simple” Plus and the top-end Max).

However, Apple’s “dark horse”, which has been rumored for a long time, is the Ultra version. As an uncompromising device for the most demanding (or lovers of expensive things). It can replace Pro Max or stand alone in the 16th generation of devices. There is hope for the reincarnation of the iPhone in a compact mini body.

Let’s try to break down the arguments for and against buying a new version of a smartphone from Apple:
For
· Processor upgrade in all models with a focus on chip energy efficiency;
· They will add action buttons to the device body;
· Those who use the iPhone as a professional photography tool should consider the Pro Max version with an updated telephoto lens;
· It is planned to expand the diagonal of the displays, but at the same time moderately.
Against
· The performance of the current line has hit a ceiling: all the figures for capacity increases are really just numbers. The user will not actually feel the changes;
· If there is no increase in the display frequency to 120 Hz in the basic version, then we can say with confidence that no user-visible changes have occurred in the line;
· Given the volatility of exchange rates at launch, the iPhone 16 will be obscenely expensive. But the price of the iPhone 15 will drop, where for the price of the base 16 you can get the 15 Pro.

The global announcement will happen at the beginning of the second ten days of September. And two weeks later – sales start. Apple currently does not ship its new products to Russia. But parallel import has been set up. So on September 23-26 you can expect the delivery of the basic version iPhone 16. And on mass sale – already in October 2024.

Processor
A17, but not Pro, as it was in15 versions. In addition to the chip itself, the cooling system is also interesting. There were complaints about overheating in the 15th iteration of the iPhone. The case is thin, the processor is powerful – so nothing surprising. Engineers had to solve the problem using hardware methods, that is, updating the firmware and code.

But it’s much more effective to initially create an effective cooling system that maximizes the processor’s performance. The iPhone 16 is expected to use graphene in heatsinks instead of copper to remove excess heat.
Memory
RAM remains the same – 6 or will increase to 8 GB. As for the built-in memory, there are already standard values for the line: 128, 256 and 512 GB.
Connection
In terms of communications, there are no new products, but a full range: Sim, e-Sim and DualSim – support for 2G, 3G, 4G LTE, 5G, GSM. The Wi-Fi module will remain the sixth generation. The seventh has already been presented, but the new product, according to rumors, is being saved for pro versions.
Screen
The standard screen size of 6.1 inches can grow by several millimeters to a maximum of 6.3 inches, and the frames can become even thinner.

The new product is tipped to have a new display. Firstly, a change in the matrix technology itself, which will add depth, richness to the picture, and most importantly, contribute to energy efficiency. That is, it will drain the battery less. The image technology itself will be, as befits top-end devices, OLED. The supplier can traditionally be Samsung.
A real treat for fans would be to increase the screen refresh rate to 120Hz, or at least 90Hz. Pro versions have had it for a couple of years (and Android even longer). The basic ones, alas, are deprived. Let us explain that the screen refresh rate affects the smoothness of the animation. The higher the value, the less “slowdown” of the picture. This can be compared to watching a video at 24 frames per second and 60 frames. The second one looks more “alive”.
Frame
There is a high probability that an Action Button will appear on the body, which was previously only available in Pro/Max. Its function can be programmed to turn off the sound, shoot the camera, use a flashlight, and other actions from the set that the developers offer.
But the keyboard game doesn’t end there. The volume buttons seem to no longer be mechanical. They will become capacitive, that is, electronic. And the vibration drive will be responsible for the pressing effect (so that the owner understands that he is pressing something).

Camera
Most likely, the camera will be 48 MP, as in the previous version. For several years the basic ones were equipped with standard 12 MP, and the “breakthrough” (more precisely, the increase) by four times happened only in version 15. It is unlikely that they will abandon it so quickly, because the technology has not yet “rusted.”
Also standard will be a telephoto lens (for getting closer) and a 3 MP wide-angle lens.
What’s new in the 16 will likely be a camera arrangement: lenses one under the other, in a row (as in version 12), and not diagonally. There is an explanation for this: Apple is focusing on augmented reality technologies, 3D video and other trends of progress. To shoot such videos or work with similar processes, you need a special arrangement of the camera unit

Battery
Apple doesn’t like to talk about batteries, since in absolute terms of capacity they are often inferior even to low-budget models. The iPhone 16 will likely have a battery in the 3,300-3,500 mAh capacity range. However, thanks to serious optimization, this should be enough for a day of using the device.

A18 Pro is new for 2024. The main purpose is to quickly process requests from the neural network, which is fully integrated into various applications. Apple has been doing well with power for a long time. But at the presentation they are guaranteed to say the usual phrase in the spirit of “We have increased productivity by 40-50-60% compared to last year’s version.” And after that there will be an asterisk and a note – “according to our measurements, based on our processors, in some tasks.”
And it’s not a matter of marketing gimmicks or deceptions. Processors in “civilian” smartphones have reached the ceiling; tasks for them have not yet been invented. But what the A18 in the iPhone 16 Pro can really boast of is energy efficiency. Again: compared to previous versions. Optimizing battery costs is the main thing that users and the company itself rely on.
But if graphene radiators are used for cooling, then nothing will stop you from breaking performance records.
Memory

RAM 8 GB – everything is standard here. The minimum amount of internal memory is 128 GB, the maximum is 1 TB.
Connection
The introduction of the latest communication standards, for example, seventh generation Wi-Fi, is expected here. Its throughput reaches 46 Gbit/s. True, provided that the router distributes the Internet in the required range. This is still rare even for 2024. But at least it’s a foundation for the future.
The Pro version also includes a new modem from Qualcomm Snapdragon (probably the X75 version). Its task is to accept accelerated 5G. However, for Russia this communication standard is not the most relevant and is unlikely to appear widely in the coming years – it is too expensive for operators, given the fact that there will be few owners of devices that support the option.

Screen
The use of redesigned matrix technology is expected. But a much more significant change is the Dynamic Island with an even larger set of animations for different scenarios. At the same time, the island can be completely hidden at the user’s request.
